Brief Introduction:
Som Mandal, 59 years, is a Constitutional and Corporate lawyer who has been in practice since 30 years. He is the fourth generation of G.C. Mandal, who was the Co founder of India’s oldest law firm, Fox Mandal and comes from a very traditional and reputed family in Bengal and North Kolkata. He did his schooling from Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapeeth, Deoghar and then completed
B.A. from St. Xavier’s College Kolkata, after which he completed LLB from University of Calcutta and was enrolled with the Bar Council West Bengal in the year 1988. He has been in politics since 1984 and is a known man in the government circle for his contribution and active support in key policy issues especially related to the legal industry and Investments to India. His father Shri Dinabandhu Mandal, was also a member of RSS as a young man in 1950’s. Fox Mandal also provided the first speaker to the West Bengal State Assembly, when its partner, Saila Kumar Mukherjee was appointed as speaker after his election in the year 1952. Fox Mandal has always contributed to Indian politics, and it continued the tradition when three of its associates from New Delhi were elected to the Parliament in 2009 from various political parties.
Som Mandal is Partner of Fox Mandal, one of the oldest and largest solicitor firm of India. He’s a highly noted and recognized lawyer in the country and has many accolades to his name. He was awarded by the Indian Council of Jurist on the occasion of National Law day Award 2002 in India for his unique contribution in the field Corporate Law by late Hon’ble Former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Mr. Mandal has featured in Asian Legal Business Magazine’s Hot 100 Lawyers of Asia and also amongst the 40 International Star Lawyer graded by The Lawyer magazine UK. Has been awarded by the Rt Hon’ble Lord Phillips President of the Supreme Court
of the UK for his Professional Excellence and for providing quality legal service with creativity and Innovation in UK. Was nominated by a top Magazine in India amongst the top 50 lawyers of India. Has been nominated leading Individual Lawyer for Corporate and M&A, Project Finance and Oil and Gas. He left Kolkata in 1989 to start practice in Hon’ble Supreme Court, New Delhi, and since then, the firm has grown by leaps and bounds to touch stellar heights. While being the Managing Partner of Fox Mandal , the firm has been ranked as the top firm in India by various International journals. FM was featured in “The lawyers- 2014 Asia Pacific 150” amongst “Top 10 Indian law firms”. FM won the “Acquisition International Dispute Resolution Firm of the Year Award 2013”. Som Mandal is devoting himself for serving the people of Bengal. He has been actively involved in corporate social activities (CSR) by providing free legal aid to the economically weak and other contributions. He also encourages aspiring artist to hold exhibitions in the art gallery that he has created in a section of his firm. Now he is gearing up for a bigger responsibility of serving larger section of people. The first step of which has been taken by instituting “Friends of Bengal”, an organization being set up to promote and encourage all those who have connections with Bengal from around the world to develop Bengal into one of the finest states of India. Mr. Mandal has strong connections with the business community and political personalities inside and outside the country and Friends of Bengal will help in harnessing the intellectual and economic potential of people who would want to contribute towards the development of Bengal. The organization will address key issues concerning the people of Bengal and work towards achieving its aim of creating “Sonar Bengal”. He is involved with many other Social activities in North Kolkata including Alliance Club of Chowringhee, DuerPalli, PalliBasibrind etc.
Som Mandal is the Chief Patron of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Health Care Trust. The Trust is served by dedicated volunteers from all over Bengal to assist the people of Bengal in Medical and Health related issues. The Trust primarily assist poor people to avail medical assistance in bigger cities in Bengal either free or at a nominal cost, assist patient and their families when they go for treatment outside Bengal, making people aware of all the health schemes of the Central and the State government, hosting health and blood donation Camps all over Bengal, arranging for NRI doctors to serve the people of Bengal etc.
Mr. Mandal, is well known for his legal acumen and his affiliations with legal bodies. He is a member with the Supreme Court Bar Association, Delhi High Court Bar Association, International Bar Association, American Bar Association (International Section) Union des Advocat, Inter Pacific Bar Association etc. He is an Indian representative at the Commission on Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce Paris, and was the Vice Chair of the Asia Pacific Forum and Council member of Section on Legal Practice of the International Bar Association and of Committee
on Corporate Law & Legal Affairs-FICCI.He actively contributes in various International Seminars and regularly speaks at international forums to promote Investments to India. He comes out with a Book entitled “Investing In India” which captures the practical informations which International Investors seek to know before embarking in their investments in India. He has developed strong connection globally with Multinational and politicians with his hard work and Goodwill. He hopes to leverage his connections based on hard work and good will to realise his dream of participating in development of India and Bengal in particular in the years to come.
He has been the Convenor of the WB State PIL cell and was made Special Invitee to the WB State BJP Executive Committee. He is very active in assisting the WB state BJP in all its important legal cases in Bengal and obtained several orders for party workers. His law firm handled the Narada Matter and currently assisting the Shankaracharya of Kedernath in the Ram Janmabhoomi case in Supreme Court.
He was given a ticket by BJP to contest the West Bengal Assembly Election in 2016 from Shyampukur Constituency the heartland of North Kolkata. Was made member of National Executive of BJP Legal Affairs Department.
